8 of the Worlds Best Snorkeling Spots to Swim with Dolphins



Out of all the snorkeling encounters one can have, dolphins are very high on the list of most ocean lovers! These highly intelligent and social mammals can be found in almost every ocean and sea in the world. Some specific species live in fresh water rivers around the world like the Amazon river dolphin.

There are currently 40 different species of dolphins identified, of which 9 are considered threatened species. The main threats for dolphins involve bycatch, water pollution and habitat loss.


Dolphins are very social animals that live in pods, which are wonderful to encounter while snorkeling. It is always a thrilling sight to meet with a dozen of these animals, that can be playful and emit very specific sounds underwater to communicate.


We have listed below some of the best spots to have a good chance to encounter dolphins while snorkeling.



Egypt

The Red Sea is home to several species of dolphins. Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Sataya Reef (100km south of Marsa Alam) are some of the areas where it is common to encounter them. Depending on how far the reefs are, the trip can take most part of the day. The Red Sea is usually calm and the weather rarely goes below 22°C in winter, so this is a popular spot for families as well.

The Bahamas

Bimini and Grand Bahamas islands both have snorkel sites where with some luck you can encounter dolphins in the wild. The most spotted species in this area are Atlantic Spotted dolphins and Bottlenose dolphins. You will find short day trips and longer liveaboard trips going out at sea from Bimini to spot dolphins.

Be aware that some other places in the Bahamas offer dolphin experiences with captive animals.


Hawaii

Hawaii is home to an incredible biodiversity and various species of dolphins can regularly be spotted, such as Spinner, Bottlenose, Spotted, and Rough-toothed dolphins. Depending on which island you are visiting, you will find various reefs where dolphins can be spotted in Oahu, Big Island along the Kona coast and Maui. Again, double check the type of operations as some places offer dolphin encounter with animals in captivity.

South Africa

The long coast of South Africa is known to divers for the famous Sardine Run in May/June, where millions of sardines travel up north and attract a variety of large animals, including dolphins. During this period, it is possible to snorkel and dive in areas where the sardines go through around the Eastern Cape. It is however relatively cold water and the conditions can be strenuous, so it is not recommended for children or snorkelers in weaker physical conditions.

For less spectacular but easier encounters, dolphins can be spotted in several bays in Cape Town, where snorkeling tours are available. Plettenberg Bay, along the Garden Route, is a popular dolphin-watching destination.

New Zealand

New Zealand is home to several species of dolphins, including the common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, and Hector's dolphin. The best spots for snorkeling with dolphins in New Zealand include Kaikoura on the South Island, where you might get to swim with pods of hundreds of dusky dolphins. Another good spot is the Bay of Islands on the North Island, where you can snorkel with playful bottlenose and common dolphins. Finally one of the most popular snorkeling spots in New Zealand is Poor Knights Islands marine park, where you can spot dolphins but also a wide range of other marine life.


Madeira, Portugal

While part of Portugal, Madeira archipelago is actually closer to Africa than it is to Europe. Madeira is known for its diverse marine life and is a great destination for snorkeling with dolphins. The best spot for snorkeling with dolphins in Madeira is the Desertas Islands, a nature reserve located south of Madeira. Here, visitors can snorkel with common dolphins, as well as other species such as turtles, various species of rays, and fish.

The Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are renowned for their unique wildlife and marine life, and snorkeling there is a popular activity. The best spot for snorkeling with dolphins in the Galapagos is the Darwin Bay area, which is home to several species of dolphins, including the spot tail dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin. Snorkeling in the Galapagos is a very special experience, as you might also encounter turtles, rays, reef sharks, and plenty of fish species.


French Polynesia

French Polynesia is a dream destination for those who love snorkeling with dolphins. The best spot for snorkeling with dolphins in French Polynesia is the island of Moorea, where visitors can swim with spinner dolphins in their natural habitat. These playful dolphins are known for their acrobatic displays, and snorkeling with them is a truly magical experience. French Polynesia archipelago offers stunning reefs and marine life, that will surely impress the most seasoned snorkellers and divers!
