The Healing Powers Of Scuba Diving For Mind And Body

Scuba diving can be life-changing for people with physical impairments and mental health issues, a recent study in Disability & Rehabilitation finds. In fact, over 80% of participants described their dive sessions as “transformative”, and even said they relieved mental and physical pain. This is great news, especially considering that 1 in 4 U.S. adults has a physical disability — and they’re five times more likely to experience mental health issues. On top of that, one in six U.S. adults lives with a mental illness. So, if you have a chronic health condition, why not experience the healing powers of scuba diving first-hand — just remember to pick a beginner-friendly dive spot and get clearance from your doctor first.

Boost mood, manage pain

It’s something we all knew, but now science backs it up — scuba diving is fun! 100% of participants in the recent study reported feeling more joyful, euphoric, and excited during and after their scuba sessions. What triggered these positive emotions was the sense of adventure and awe sparked by their underwater exploration, as well as the sense of accomplishment that comes from trying something new. Participants also unanimously felt relaxed. This builds on past research that draws similarities between scuba diving and meditation techniques. Both these practices involve slow, steady breaths, which calm the nervous system and lower stress levels.

Scuba diving also relieves mental and physical pain — the water’s buoyancy lessens the pressure on muscles and joints and creates a feeling of weightlessness. This aids ease of movement and further boosts mood. Notably, one participant with traumatic brain injury (TBI) said “a lot” of their physical and mental pain dissipates underwater. Another participant, also with a TBI, called scuba diving “the best form of pain relief”.

Get medical clearance first

Before you go diving, get clearance from your doctor as some conditions may interfere with underwater safety. For example, certain medications affect heart function, and this can be dangerous while diving. Tricyclics and beta blockers are particular concerns here. Alternatively, depression symptoms can also pose a risk underwater. If you have trouble with information retention or decision making, for example, you may not be able to think straight in an underwater emergency. Diving may, therefore, not be right for you at this time, but if you manage your symptoms successfully, your doctor may give you the green light.

On your dive, use reliable equipment to further stay safe. This includes a good mask that won’t fog up with annoying condensation — one like the Tidal mask that comes with advanced anti-fog technology. This way, you'll maintain perfect vision and won’t miss out on any incredible sights. It’s also a good idea to wear a medical tag that lists your health conditions and allergies, so healthcare professionals can more easily treat you in case an emergency arises. This is especially important, given that between 7%-14% of the general population are allergic to at least one medication.

Beginner-friendly dive spots in the U.S.

When you’re ready to get into the water, head to Casino Point Dive Park in Southern California for amazing beginner-friendly scuba diving. There’s a short flight of stairs with handrails to help you enter and exit the water, and the depth ranges from ten to 100 feet deep. A variety of marine life calls this beautiful park home — including, octopus, lobsters, and moray eels. Alternatively, the Winch Hole in the Florida Keys is another beginner-friendly spot. At depths of just 25-30 feet, you’ll have no trouble staying calm and relaxed underwater. Aside from the fascinating large winch wreck that dates back to the 1800s, you’ll also see colorful schools of chubs, snappers, and parrotfish float by.

Science continues to show scuba diving can effectively manage mental and physical health conditions. As long as you prioritize safety and choose beginner-friendly dive spots, you're bound to have an unforgettable experience and return feeling refreshed and renewed.
